Empatica is a full-stack digital health company and MIT Media Lab spinoff, founded in 2013 in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Matteo Lai, Simone Tognetti, and Rosalind Picard. The company designs and develops FDA-cleared medical wearables and AI-enabled software for continuous physiological monitoring, clinical research, and neurological disease management. Its flagship product line — including the EmbracePlus smartwatch and EmbraceMini actigraphy device — collects real-time data on heart rate variability, electrodermal activity, skin temperature, motion, and blood oxygenation. More than half of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies — including Biogen, Takeda, and Chugai — use Empatica's platform in clinical trials. The company has obtained 8 FDA clearances and is deployed in over 160 countries with 100,000+ devices in use, supported by more than 12,000 academic publications citing its technology.
