Breaking engineers microorganisms that naturally feed on chemicals and compounds in plastic waste, digesting and breaking them down into harmless organic materials without pretreatment. The company applies bioinspired synthetic biology, enabled in part through work with Colossal Biosciences and advisors from Harvard's Wyss Institute and Church Lab, to degrade many plastic types and reuse breakdown products as materials and commodities. Its solutions target composting, plastic recycling, landfills, digesters, biogas and biomass, ocean cleanup, wastewater treatment, and soil, aiming to make resilient single-use plastics palatable to nature.
