Founded in 2018 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Umbulizer emerged from MIT's IDEAS Global Challenge, winning the $15,000 grand prize in 2018 and subsequently the Sloan Health Care Innovation Prize in 2019. The startup's UMV-001 portable ventilator was developed in collaboration with pulmonary and critical care experts and is designed for inter- and intra-hospital transport. The device costs approximately $2,000 versus $15,000 for standard ventilators. Founders include Shaheer Piracha. The company also developed a proprietary mobile application enabling clinicians to monitor waveforms and receive emergency alarms in real-time.
