Sublime Systems produces low-carbon cement using an electrochemical process that foregoes the kiln, the most energy-intensive part of ordinary portland cement production, reducing the energy intensity of production by 30-40% while avoiding emissions of CO2, CO, NOx, SOx, mercury, and particulates. The company spun out of MIT on March 14, 2020, co-founded by Leah Ellis and Yet-Ming Chiang. Its Sublime Cement meets ASTM C1157, the standard performance specification for hydraulic cement, and replaces ordinary portland cement in concrete using similar mix designs and admixtures and the industry's existing on-site equipment, operations, and processes.
