Engineering waste into purpose
Bengaluru, India · Founded 2022
About
altM (short for 'alternate materials') is an India-based materials innovation company that develops bio-based chemicals and biomaterials using agricultural residue as feedstock. The company processes lignocellulosic biomass — rice straw, wheat straw, and sugarcane bagasse — through an integrated biorefinery model that extracts cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and silica fractions, then upgrades them into specialty biochemicals and biomaterials. altM's products target industries including packaging, cosmetics, construction, textiles, and industrial chemicals, replacing petrochemical-derived inputs with sustainable bio-based alternatives. Founded in Bengaluru in 2022 by former Tesla manufacturing engineers, the company raised $3.5M in seed funding in August 2023 and is targeting commercial production launch in Q3 2026.
