Recurse Center

Recurse Center (known as Hacker School until its 2015 rename) is a self-directed educational retreat for programmers, founded in 2010 by Nicholas Bergson-Shilcock and Sonali Sridhar and based in Brooklyn, New York. Participants join free, full-time batches lasting 6 or 12 weeks with no teachers, tests, grades, or fixed curriculum — instead choosing their own projects and collaborators in a peer-driven environment inspired by unschooling principles; the minimum bar is roughly 6 months of prior programming experience. RC can be attended in person, remotely, or in a hybrid format, and maintains an active alumni community of 3,000+ programmers worldwide with recurring 'Never Graduate Week' reunions. Attendance is free; the organization sustains itself in part through recruiting relationships that place alumni into engineering roles at partner companies, functioning as a hybrid educational institution and technical talent pipeline rather than a VC-backed startup.
