Plant-e

Plant-e is a Dutch cleantech company founded in 2009 as a spin-off of the Department of Environmental Technology at Wageningen University & Research. The company develops technology that generates electricity from living plants, harnessing the natural interaction between plant roots and soil microorganisms through Plant Microbial Fuel Cell (P-MFC) technology. Plant-e's current flagship product line, the SensorStick, is a fully integrated, self-sufficient monitoring solution that uses plant-generated electricity to power IoT sensors for groundwater level monitoring, soil moisture measurement, and water quality detection — eliminating the need for traditional batteries in remote or hard-to-reach environments. Since 2019, the company has shifted focus from ambient lighting systems to plant-powered IoT sensor applications for wetlands, agriculture, golf courses, and urban green spaces.
