Overture Services was founded in 1997 as GoTo.com by Bill Gross of Idealab and pioneered the pay-per-click advertising model for search engines. The company allowed advertisers to bid on keywords and have their listings appear prominently in search results. GoTo.com went public in 1999 and renamed itself Overture Services in 2001.
