Nitrase Therapeutics is a South San Francisco-based biopharmaceutical company deploying its proprietary NITROME platform to unlock the therapeutic potential of nitrases — a newly discovered class of enzymes that catalyze protein nitration. Founded in 2012 as Nitrome Biosciences by Irene Griswold-Prenner, Ph.D., the company established that protein nitration is an enzymatically driven process rather than a random chemical reaction, opening an entirely new field of therapeutic research. By inhibiting the nitrases responsible for disease-causing protein nitration, Nitrase aims to develop first-in-class treatments for neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson disease, as well as inflammatory and cancer indications.
