Lixea Sweden AB operates Lixea's pilot biorefinery plant in Bäckhammar, Kristinehamn, Sweden, scaling up the company's proprietary Dendronic ionic-liquid fractionation process to separate cellulose and lignin from waste wood and other biomass. Incorporated in 2021 as the Swedish operating arm of London-founded Lixea (formerly Chrysalix Technologies, spun out of Imperial College London in 2017), the pilot plant converts wood waste into low-hemicellulose cellulose and carbohydrate-free lignin for sustainable materials. The site has received backing from the European Innovation Council, the Swedish Energy Agency, and Region Värmland.
