IONATE is a deep-tech innovator building the technology backbone for smart electricity grids. The company develops Hybrid Intelligent Transformers (HIT) — an all-in-one hardware-software solution that equips electricity grid operators with real-time power flow control, monitoring, and data capabilities. Founded in 2019 by Matthew Williams, Luca Mezossy-Dona, and Roberto Ricci, IONATE's transformers are designed to make grids radically more efficient, adaptable, and resilient as they integrate growing shares of renewable energy and AI-driven data center loads. The platform combines smart transformer hardware at the grid edge with AI coordination software across the broader system, enabling utilities and energy companies to manage the evolving demands of decarbonization and electrification. IONATE has raised over $21 million including a £3.3M seed round led by IQ Capital and a $17M Series A, and has partnered with major utilities including EDP to test its grid technology in production environments.
