EneCoat Technologies

EneCoat Technologies is a Kyoto University spinout founded in January 2018 that develops and commercializes next-generation perovskite solar cell materials and modules. The company's technology is based on research by Professor Atsushi Wakamiya at Kyoto University's Institute for Chemical Research. Perovskite solar cells offer high energy conversion efficiency under both sunny and cloudy conditions, and can be manufactured using low-cost processes to create flexible, lightweight, and ultrathin solar films. EneCoat targets four key application areas: wearable devices, mobility (e.g. electric vehicles), stationary power generation, and special environments. In July 2024, the company raised a Series C round totaling 5.5 billion yen (approx. $35M USD), accelerating commercialization of its proprietary cell technology. EneCoat was selected for the 2025 Forbes Asia 100 to Watch list and achieved over 30% conversion efficiency with a perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell.
