Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking Division (MBD) was Goldman Sachs' principal investing arm, formed in September 1998 to house the firm's long-term private equity, real estate, and infrastructure investments made independently or alongside clients. Over more than two decades it built a portfolio spanning corporate equity, credit, real estate, and infrastructure, with notable investments including a minority stake in Polo Ralph Lauren, the creation of the Yankees Entertainment and Sports (YES) Network, and a 2006 investment in Aramark. In January 2020, Goldman Sachs reorganized the firm and folded MBD into its Asset Management division (co-led by Eric Lane and Julian Salisbury), and its principal-investing activity now continues under Goldman Sachs Asset Management / Goldman Sachs Alternatives rather than as a standalone unit.
