Cendant Corporation (HFS Inc.)

Venture Capital

Cendant Corporation was a multinational conglomerate formed in December 1997 through the merger of HFS Incorporated (Hospitality Franchise Systems) and CUC International. At its peak it operated brands spanning real estate franchising (Century 21, Coldwell Banker), vehicle rental (Avis, Budget), hospitality (Wyndham, Howard Johnson's), and travel services. In 2005 Cendant announced a breakup into four independent companies — Realogy, Wyndham Worldwide, Travelport, and Avis Budget Group — completing the dissolution by 2006. The entity no longer exists; Avis Budget Group is its legal successor.
