Craig Venter and Hamilton Smith, engineering microalgae strains to produce low-carbon biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel, and omega-3 nutritional products. The company partnered with ExxonMobil for over a decade on algae-based biofuel R&D and later raised a $25M Series A from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Chevron, and United Airlines in 2023. Viridos filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware in April 2025, and its assets were sold to Breakthrough Energy Ventures II in a court-supervised sale.
