About
Tokutek was a Massachusetts-based database technology company that developed TokuDB, a high-performance, write-optimized storage engine for MySQL and MariaDB built on Fractal Tree Index data structures. Founded by academic researchers including professors from MIT and Rutgers, Tokutek commercialized fractal tree indexing to deliver significantly faster insert performance and better compression than traditional B-Tree indexes — enabling large-scale MySQL deployments to handle hundreds of millions of rows without performance degradation. The company also developed TokuMX, a MongoDB storage engine using the same technology. Tokutek open-sourced TokuDB in 2013 and was acquired by Percona in 2015, which integrated TokuDB into Percona Server for MySQL.
