Sustainable Chemicals LLC (Sust-Chem) is a Golden, Colorado-based green chemistry company developing and commercializing a novel family of entirely plant-based, compostable bioplastics designed to replace conventional petrochemical polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene. The company's bioplastics are produced from a bio-based monomer derived from cellulosic biomass using a process that does not require fermentation, enabling more economical scale-up than most competing bioplastics technologies. This approach makes Sust-Chem's materials cost-competitive with fossil-fuel-based plastics while offering a 45-75% lower carbon footprint. Target initial markets include disposable food packaging and rigid applications such as cosmetic containers, detergent bottles, and bottle lids. Founded by CEO Silvia Luebben, the company has received three SBIR/STTR awards from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture totaling over $1 million.
