About

SunEdison, Inc. (formerly MEMC Electronic Materials) was a major renewable energy company headquartered in Maryland Heights, Missouri. Originally founded in 1959 as the Monsanto Electronic Materials Company, it evolved from a silicon-wafer manufacturer into one of the world's largest solar and wind energy developers. The company pioneered the solar-as-a-service model and solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) for commercial customers, including national retailers, government agencies, and utilities. At its peak in 2014, SunEdison reported revenues of $2.48 billion and employed approximately 7,300 people globally. After aggressive expansion through debt-financed acquisitions, the company accumulated over $11 billion in debt and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on April 21, 2016. It emerged from bankruptcy in December 2017 as a much smaller private entity.
