The company raised over $1.5 billion including $535 million in U.S. Department of Energy loan guarantees, and operated a state-of-the-art 300,000 square foot automated manufacturing facility. Facing intense price competition from Chinese solar panel makers, Solyndra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2011 and ceased operations, becoming one of the most high-profile clean energy failures of the Obama administration era.
