Social Bicycles

Social Bicycles (also known as SoBi) was a New York-based bikeshare technology company that pioneered the 'smartbike' — integrating GPS, cellular connectivity, and locking systems directly into each bicycle rather than relying on docking stations. Founded in 2010 by Ryan Rzepecki, Justin Wiley, Marcin Pyla, and Nick Foley, the company developed a mobile-powered platform that enabled affordable, scalable, and intelligent bikesharing networks. Social Bicycles grew to operate in over 40 markets globally with more than 15,000 bikes and over 5 million trips completed. In 2013, the company challenged traditional dock-based systems by introducing dockless bikeshare technology. The company later rebranded as JUMP Bikes and raised a $10 million Series A round led by Menlo Ventures in January 2018, before being acquired by Uber.
