Protective packaging designed to disappear
SMUSH Materials is an Italian startup that produces 100% natural, compostable, high-performance secondary packaging using mycelium technology — the root system of fungi — to transform agricultural by-products into a sustainable alternative to expanded polystyrene (EPS). Their products include standard forms (corner pieces, dividers, blocks, filling chips, bottle inserts) and custom-designed shapes. Compared to conventional EPS production, SMUSH packaging reduces CO2 emissions by up to 90% and cuts disposal costs by 80%. The company participated in Plug and Play's New Materials & Packaging program and raised a €1M pre-seed round in April 2025.
