Scribd was founded in 2007 by Trip Adler, Jared Friedman, and Tikhon Bernstam, who received initial seed funding through Y Combinator before launching the site from a San Francisco apartment in March 2007. Originally a document-sharing platform once described as 'the YouTube for documents,' it let anyone upload, read, and self-publish documents online, growing to roughly 23.5 million monthly visitors by November 2008 and ranking among the top social media sites of that era. The Scribd Store launched in 2009, letting writers sell digital copies of their work directly to readers. In November 2023, Scribd, Inc. unbundled its offering into three distinct products — Everand (books, magazines, podcasts, and more), Scribd (documents), and Slideshare (presentations) — with Scribd, Inc. continuing to operate what it describes as the world's largest online library.
