Generating scalable, low-cost, clean energy from the ocean with autonomous wind turbine ships
SAILWINT is developing autonomous sailing wind turbine ships that generate scalable, low-cost clean energy far offshore on the open ocean. The ships use wind turbines simultaneously for propulsion and energy generation, producing electricity stored in onboard batteries or converted to hydrogen. By operating in far-offshore seas where winds are stronger and more consistent, SAILWINT's approach can reduce energy costs by 30–50% compared to conventional offshore wind, while avoiding conflicts with fishing, tourism, and nature conservation. The company has completed proof-of-concept pilots on the Baltic Sea and North Sea, backed by a German federal grant and the Techstars Berlin DeepTech 2024 program.
