Restate

Restate is a developer tools company building a lightweight durable execution runtime that makes it easy to write resilient distributed applications, AI agents, and backend workflows. Founded by Stephan Ewen (co-creator of Apache Flink and former CTO of Data Artisans/Ververica) together with Flink committers Igal Shilman and Till Rohrmann, Restate abstracts away the complexity of retries, state machines, distributed locks, and fault-tolerant coordination by combining workflow-as-code with an event-driven foundation. The platform ships as a single lightweight binary, supports TypeScript, Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, and Rust SDKs, and integrates with serverless platforms like AWS Lambda and Cloudflare Workers. Restate raised a $7 million seed round led by Redpoint Ventures in June 2024, with participation from Essence VC, firstminute capital, and angels including Datadog founder Oli Pomel and Apache Kafka co-creators Jay Kreps and Neha Narkhede.
