Qwiki was a New York City-based startup co-founded in 2010 by Doug Imbruce and Louis Monier (inventor of AltaVista). It debuted at TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2010, winning the Disrupt Cup with a product that generated narrated multimedia video summaries from search queries. After initial success as an information experience engine — its iPad app was downloaded over 3 million times and named Apple's best Search & Reference app of 2011 — Qwiki pivoted to a consumer mobile app letting users automatically create personal cinematic videos from their photos, videos, and music. Yahoo acquired Qwiki in July 2013 for a reported $50 million to bolster its mobile content strategy.
