Quibi

Quibi was an American short-form mobile streaming platform founded in August 2018 as NewTV by Jeffrey Katzenberg and led by CEO Meg Whitman. The service delivered original content in episodes of 10 minutes or less, purpose-built for mobile viewing with a patented 'Turnstyle' technology allowing seamless switching between portrait and landscape orientation. Quibi raised $1.75 billion from major investors including Disney, WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures, Goldman Sachs, Alibaba, and others before launching on April 6, 2020. Despite 1.7 million downloads in its first week, the platform struggled to convert free trial users into paid subscribers, hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the on-the-go mobile viewing behavior the product was designed around. On October 21, 2020, Katzenberg and Whitman announced the company would shut down, and the service officially ceased operations on December 1, 2020. In January 2021, Roku acquired rights to Quibi's 75+ original programs; those shows were rebranded as Roku Originals.
