Periodic Labs is an AI research company building AI scientists and autonomous laboratories for physical science discovery. Founded in 2025 by Liam Fedus (former VP of Research at OpenAI, co-creator of ChatGPT) and Ekin Dogus Cubuk (former Google DeepMind, creator of GNoME), the company aims to create AI systems that can autonomously conjecture hypotheses, run experiments, and learn from results — generating novel scientific knowledge beyond what exists on the internet. The company is starting in the physical sciences, focusing on materials discovery (including room-temperature superconductors) and semiconductor applications. Backed by a16z, Felicis, DST, NVentures (NVIDIA), Accel, Jeff Bezos, Eric Schmidt, and Jeff Dean, Periodic Labs has raised over $300M.
