About
OpenCoin was the original corporate name of the company later renamed Ripple Labs and then Ripple. Co-founded in September 2012 by Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb, building on earlier engineering work by David Schwartz, OpenCoin developed the XRP Ledger, a distributed, open-source payment protocol designed to use far less energy and settle transactions much faster than Bitcoin. In April 2013 OpenCoin closed an angel funding round backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Google Ventures, and that September the company renamed itself Ripple Labs, Inc.
