Founded in 2011 in France, Ÿnsect was the world's most-funded insect farming company, raising over million to build vertical insect farms that produce sustainable protein ingredients for animal feed and plant fertilizers. The company pioneered large-scale mealworm farming as an alternative to conventional agriculture, operating Europe's largest vertical insect farm in Amiens, France. Ÿnsect's products targeted the aquaculture, pet food, and crop nutrition markets, positioning insect-derived protein as a lower-carbon alternative to fishmeal and soy. Despite its scale and backing, the company faced profitability challenges and was placed into judicial liquidation by a French commercial court in December 2025.
