About

Lockitron was a smart lock device made by Apigy Inc., a Y Combinator-backed startup based in Mountain View, California, founded in 2009 by Cameron Robertson and Paul Gerhardt. The product allowed homeowners to lock and unlock their front door remotely via a smartphone app, web browser, or SMS. Virtual keys could be issued and revoked on demand, enabling access management for guests and contractors. In 2012, the company ran its own crowdfunding campaign and raised over .5 million in preorders in its first week, subsequently open-sourcing the campaign software as Selfstarter. In early 2019, Lockitron was acquired by Chamberlain Group; the service was shut down on June 17, 2020.
