KOKO Networks

KOKO Networks was a Nairobi-based clean energy technology company that built a carbon-financed utility providing affordable bioethanol cooking fuel to urban households in Kenya. The company deployed a network of automated fuel dispensing units (KOKO Points) at local retail shops, enabling families to replace charcoal and kerosene stoves with cleaner bioethanol alternatives. Over its decade of operation, KOKO reached more than 1.5 million Kenyan households. Founded in 2014 and backed by international climate and development investors, KOKO Networks shut down in early 2026 due to a regulatory dispute that disrupted its carbon credit revenue model.
