HandUp is a crowdfunding and direct giving platform that connects donors with individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty through trusted nonprofit partners. Founded in August 2013 in San Francisco by Rose Broome, Sammie Rayner, and Zac Witte, HandUp enables nonprofits to create transparent fundraising campaigns where 100% of donations go directly to verified members in need — covering needs like housing security deposits, food, and other essentials. The platform operates through a network of 100+ nonprofit partners across the US including in the SF Bay Area, Detroit metro, Portland, Atlanta, and other cities. HandUp has facilitated over $7.49 million in donations and helped more than 10,500 individuals reach their goals. The company was acquired in 2017 by South Oakland Shelter.
