Gen9

Gen9 was a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based synthetic biology company that pioneered high-throughput, chip-based DNA synthesis and assembly technology. The company used silicon chip fabrication techniques to dramatically reduce the cost and accelerate the production of DNA constructs, enabling researchers to create gene-length DNA sequences at scale. Founded with roots in Harvard University's synthetic biology research community, Gen9 attracted venture investment and served pharmaceutical, academic, and industrial biotech customers. The company was acquired by Ginkgo Bioworks in January 2017, with its DNA synthesis technology integrated into Ginkgo's organism engineering platform.
