Friendster was one of the world's first major social networking sites, founded by Jonathan Abrams in Mountain View, California in 2002. At its peak the platform had over 115 million members worldwide and pioneered features that became standard across the social web. Backed by Kleiner Perkins, Benchmark Capital, and DAG Ventures, Friendster was acquired by Malaysian internet company MOL Global in 2009 for approximately $39.5 million after losing ground to MySpace and Facebook. It subsequently pivoted to social gaming in Southeast Asia before shutting down its platform in June 2015.
