About

Fakespot was a New York City-based cybersecurity and data analytics company founded in 2016 by Saoud Khalifah that used proprietary artificial intelligence to detect fake and fraudulent product reviews on major e-commerce platforms including Amazon, Walmart, eBay, and Sephora. The platform analyzed billions of consumer reviews in real time to identify suspicious activity, protect consumers from misleading ratings, and recommend better purchasing alternatives. Mozilla acquired Fakespot in May 2023 and integrated its fake-review detection technology into the Firefox browser as the Review Checker feature. Mozilla subsequently shut down the Fakespot service on July 1, 2025, citing an inability to build a sustainable business model around the product.
