ENN Fusion (新奥聚变)

ENN Fusion is the fusion-energy research arm of ENN Energy Research Institute (EERI), established in 2006 by Chinese conglomerate ENN Group to advance clean, carbon-free energy technology. ENN Fusion focuses on commercially viable proton-boron (p-11B) fusion using a spherical torus (ST) approach, which promises aneutronic, low-cost power generation cheaper than wind and solar. In October 2018, ENN built China's first medium-sized spherical torus experimental device, EXL-50, achieving first plasma in August 2019; it was upgraded to EXL-50U in 2022. ENN is now developing the next-generation EHL-2 device, targeting first plasma around 2027, with a roadmap toward a commercial demonstration reactor by 2035. Research partners include the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Southwest Institute of Physics, Peking University, Tianjin University, and international collaborators, with more than 2,400 patents filed and 1,900+ granted.
