Edge DB

EdgeDB (rebranded as Gel in 2025) is an open-source graph-relational database built on top of PostgreSQL, founded in 2019 and headquartered in San Francisco, California. It addresses ergonomic limitations of traditional SQL by combining a strict, strongly typed schema with a modern graph-relational data model and a powerful query language called EdgeQL. EdgeDB features built-in schema migrations, native GraphQL support, a rich standard library, and integrated Auth and AI extensions. The company offers both a self-hosted open-source version and Gel Cloud, a fully managed hosted service with Vercel and GitHub integration. EdgeDB has attracted backing from prominent developer-ecosystem founders including Greg Brockman (OpenAI), Guillermo Rauch (Vercel), Nat Friedman (GitHub), and Tom Preston-Werner (GitHub).
