CarbonRun

CarbonRun is a Nova Scotia-based environmental technology company pioneering river alkalinity enhancement as a scalable, nature-based carbon removal method. The company adds crushed limestone to acidified rivers, neutralizing acid pollution damage while converting atmospheric CO₂ into stable bicarbonate that rivers transport to ocean reservoirs for long-term storage — a process that generates only 5 tons of CO₂ emissions per 100 tons captured. CarbonRun describes itself as the first company in the world to use this proven river restoration approach at commercial scale for carbon removal. In 2024, the company secured a landmark $25.4 million offtake deal with Frontier buyers, committing to remove over 55,000 tons of CO₂ between 2025 and 2029. The company estimates its approach could contribute to addressing 10–15% of the global carbon dioxide removal need projected by 2050. CarbonRun has been recognized as Venture of the Year: Scaleup at the 2025 Atlantic Canada Cleantech Awards and is headquartered in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
