Direct Ocean Capture of CO2
Captura is a Caltech spinout that uses ocean-based Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) technology to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. The company's electrodialysis process acidifies seawater to release dissolved CO2, captures it, and then returns the treated water to the ocean — simultaneously removing atmospheric carbon and helping mitigate ocean acidification. Captura operates pilot plants and sells carbon removal credits to corporate buyers including Shopify, Stripe, and energy companies such as Equinor and Eni. The technology is designed to scale to gigaton-level removal at low cost by leveraging the ocean's vast natural carbon storage capacity.
