About

Broadwing Corporation was the result of Corvis Corporation's 2003 acquisition of Broadwing Communications Services Inc. and subsequent renaming in 2004. The company operated two divisions: Broadwing Communications LLC, a provider of data, internet, voice, and broadband transport services over an 18,700-mile nationwide fiber-optic network connecting 137 cities; and Corvis Equipment Corporation, which designed and manufactured advanced optical networking equipment primarily for US government customers. Originally incorporated in 1997 as Nova Technologies by physicist David Huber (founder of Ciena), Corvis raised $1.14 billion in its 2000 IPO before suffering severe losses in the telecom market collapse. The company pivoted to services by acquiring Broadwing Communications in 2003, then rebranded as Broadwing Corporation in 2004. Level 3 Communications acquired Broadwing for approximately $1.4 billion in cash and stock in 2007.
