About
Brightkite was a location-based social networking service that allowed users to check in at places via text messaging or mobile apps, see who was nearby, and connect with friends and new people based on shared locations. Founded in 2007 by Brady Becker, Martin May, and Alan Seideman — who previously built the SMS notification service Loopnote — Brightkite was an early pioneer of location-aware social discovery on mobile. The service was ad-supported and free to members, with its own in-house media sales team. In April 2009 Brightkite was acquired by mobile social network Limbo to form the largest mobile location-based social discovery service. By December 2011, all Brightkite apps had been pulled from app stores, and the service was fully discontinued by April 2012.
