BIOPHTA is a Paris-based preclinical-stage biotech company founded in 2020 by pharmacists Jean Cuiné and Jean Garrec, who together hold over 40 years of experience in ophthalmology and drug development. The company has developed a new standard of care for chronic eye diseases based on its proprietary thiomer biopolymer technological platform, which enables a 3mm ophthalmic insert — placed on the eye surface like a contact lens — to deliver continuous, controlled drug microdosing for 7 days. This technology addresses the leading unmet medical need in ophthalmology: patient non-adherence to daily eye drops and avoidance of painful intraocular injections. BIOPHTA's first clinical program targets Glaucoma (Phase 1 in 2025, $8.7 billion market) and its second targets Macular Edema (Phase 1 in 2026, $9.6 billion market), the two leading causes of blindness worldwide. The company has been recognized with the EIT Health Headstart Award, the US Academy of Medicine Healthy Longevity Award, and the i-Lab prize from the French Ministry of Research.
