About
Bebo was an American social networking website founded by Michael and Xochi Birch in January 2005 in San Francisco. At its peak it was the most widely used social networking site in the United Kingdom, registering over 10.7 million unique users and overtaking Myspace in the UK market. The site was sold to AOL in 2008 for $850 million, later sold to Criterion Capital Partners in 2010, and bought back by the original founders in 2013. After multiple relaunch attempts — including an instant messaging app and a video streaming platform — the site was shut down in May 2022 without leaving beta testing for its final iteration.
