Balancer is a decentralized, non-custodial automated market maker (AMM) protocol on Ethereum and other EVM-compatible chains that lets users create and trade customizable liquidity pools with flexible token weightings, providing fungible and yield-bearing liquidity across DeFi. Co-founded by Fernando Martinelli and Mike McDonald, the protocol launched on Ethereum mainnet in March 2020 and pioneered self-balancing weighted pools. In March 2026, Balancer Labs — the for-profit company behind the protocol — announced it would wind down as a corporate entity following a major exploit, though the decentralized Balancer protocol itself continues to operate.
