The company was founded in 2021 by Hafeezah Muhammad after she struggled to find a Medicaid-accepting mental health provider for her own child, discovering that fewer than 14% of mental health providers accept Medicaid despite over 42 million children being enrolled. Backpack's diverse clinical team — including psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and social workers — delivers therapy, psychiatry and medication management, and a self-care app, and accepts Medicaid alongside major insurance plans including Cigna, Aetna, Anthem, and UnitedHealthcare.
