Astaro was a privately held provider of network security solutions headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany and Wilmington, Massachusetts. The company developed a complete line of unified threat management (UTM) products including the Astaro Security Gateway software and hardware appliances, integrating nine critical security applications — web security, email security, and network security — in a single management platform. Astaro was protecting over 25,000 networks in 60 countries before being acquired by UK-based security firm Sophos in May 2011, after which the product line was rebranded as Sophos Security Gateway.
