Applied Nanolayers

Applied Nanolayers BV (ANL) was a Delft-based Dutch semiconductor foundry founded in 2012 by Paul Hedges and Richard van Rijn, specializing in the production of wafer-scale graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials for integration with traditional silicon semiconductor manufacturing. The company developed a fully automated process for the growth and integration of 2D materials on 200mm wafers, capable of producing 10,000 wafers per year, and offered a complete foundry solution combining 2D materials with conventional silicon device manufacturing. ANL served technology companies, innovators, and researchers requiring advanced semiconductor materials. In March 2025, the company was acquired by Black Semiconductor, a German deep-tech company specializing in integrated graphene photonics (IGP) chip connectivity technology, accelerating Black Semiconductor's technology development by approximately two years. ANL now operates as Black Semiconductor Netherlands.
