AppHarvest was an American hydroponics and vertical farming company founded in 2017 by Jonathan Webb, building and operating some of the world's largest high-tech indoor greenhouse facilities across Appalachian Kentucky. The company used robotics and AI to grow tomatoes and other produce with 90% less water than traditional farming, targeting US grocery retailers and food distributors. AppHarvest went public via SPAC merger in 2020 and operated four greenhouse facilities totaling 165 acres before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2023, after which its facilities were sold to agricultural operators including Equilibrium Capital and Bosch Growers.
