About

Albatros Energy Mali (AEM) is an independent power project operating a 90 megawatt heavy fuel oil thermal power station in Kayes, western Mali, and Mali's first IPP to feed into the national grid. The station uses six Caterpillar diesel reciprocating engines. The project reached financial close in June 2017, construction began in July 2017, and it was commissioned on October 31, 2018, ahead of schedule. Power is sold to Mali's national utility Énergie du Mali (EDM) under a 20-year power purchase agreement. Developed by Redox Power Solutions with local Malian ownership, the roughly EUR122 million project is financed under a limited-recourse structure that combines conventional project finance with an Islamic finance (Ijara) facility. The plant adds about 25% to Mali's base-load power, enough electricity for about 780,000 households, and is located near Kayes and Médine village.
