Villanueva, Alexis A is a Mountain View, California-based independent research and development entity that received NSF SBIR funding to develop a Virtual Footwear Fitting System (VFFS) for the online retail market. The Phase I project developed smartphone-based 3D foot scanning technology using photogrammetry and computer vision algorithms to generate accurate foot geometry models with 1mm accuracy, enabling online shoppers to receive precise shoe size and comfort recommendations without physical try-on. The system pairs foot scans with shoe inner-volume models captured via an Adaptive Inner Volume scanner to perform comprehensive fit analysis, targeting the $1.5B annual return-cost problem faced by online footwear retailers.
